Thermal Electro-Optical Systems, Characterization and Range PerformanceAbstract
The use of Thermal Electro-Optical Systems in air operations demands its characterization in terms of sensitivity and spatial resolution. In this way, it is possible to determine the equipment’s range performance. In order to determine the specific characteristics of the Thermal Imager, it is essential to identify figure of merit such as MRTD (Minimum Resolvable Temperature Difference), MTF (Modular Transfer Function), NETD (Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference) and SiTF (Signal Transfer Function). Based on use of an aerial thermal system employed in helicopters for Search and Rescue actions, the aimin this work was to propose a methodology for characterization and evaluation of range performance. Todothis, a FLIR STAR SAFARI III model was studied, using only a black body and image processing software for figures of merit’s parameterization.
